Valentine's Day Star Sugar Cookies (with Pink Icing, yay)

We had a Trader Joe's Sugar Cookie Workshop kit leftover from Christmas time that we never had a chance to make. I thought it would be fun to use the kit to make Valentine's Day cookies. We decided to to save the green, orange, and blue for decorating cookies next month during Hunter and Drayken's birthdays. Instead we put the included vanilla icing into two different bowls. To one we added raspberry juice (as in the drained juice from a bag of thawed organic raspberries) and to one we added strawberry juice (ditto).

Here Ronin is mixing the raspberry hot pink icing.

And this is Hunter mixing the icing with strawberry juice which creates a lighter, more pig-like pink. We may have used too much juice but luckily we had some tapioca starch on hand which we used to thicken up the mixture. Next time we'll have a better idea of how much juice to use.

After the cookies cooled, I separated them onto three different plates.
We each got five cookies to decorate.
We had some all natural pastel sprinkles leftover from the Trader Joe's Gingerbread Man kit. We used those on these cookies.

Aren't they gorgeous?

The verdict was that we liked the raspberry better for color and the strawberry better for flavor. So I guess we'll have to just keep making both!

  1. Those look great! Great idea to color the icing. We'll have to try that.

  2. I was wondering about the flavor. I'll have to try that. Pretty cookies.
